The agreement was signed earlier in the year but preliminary evaluation of technical feasibilities has only been recently completed.

Gevo CEO Patrick Gruber said that BioFuel Energy has agreed to explore a possible retrofit of its assets to produce isobutanol, having recognized the potential to be at the forefront of the Advanced Biofuel market.

"The capacity of BioFuel’s plants would allow us to begin delivering isobutanol at the scale that refinery customers are likely to demand," added Gruber.

Gevo and BioFuel Energy will continue to work towards large-scale production of isobutanol at an existing or future BioFuel plant, while seeking an Advanced Biofuel status for isobutanol.

Such status would allow a direct competition of biodiesel and imported ethanol produced from sugarcane with domestic corn-based biofuels.
