Majority-financed by Glencore, the mine has supported the region with 2,750 direct jobs and around 1,500 indirect jobs.

Work on the project commenced in 2007 and its infrastructure and nickel smelting technology together with a world-class ore body are said to be the major benefits for New Caledonia’s nickel industry.

Glencore CEO Ivan Glasenberg said: "This inauguration marks a milestone for our New Caledonian operations and for the country’s nickel industry.

"We look forward to continuing our well established collaborations with the local community, government and our joint venture partners as we continue the ramp up period to nameplate capacity of 60ktpa."

During the construction phase, the project contributed over €1.9bn in direct benefits, the company claimed.

On reaching peak production levels, the mine is expected to employ 950 people.
