The data center will feature Google’s most advanced efficiency technologies and will serve as hub for Internet traffic. It is expected to create up to 100 jobs.

Earlier this year, TVA’s board of directors has decided to close the Widows Creek facility following new coal combustion rules adopted by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Google plans to use the existing electric transmission lines to bring in renewable energy to its new facility.

Google data center energy and location strategy director Gary Demasi said: "The idea of repurposing a former coal generating site and powering our new facility with renewable energy – especially reliable, affordable energy that we can count on 24/7 with the existing infrastructure in place – was attractive."

The company intends to collaborate with TVA to explore new renewable energy projects, and bring the power onto the electrical grid.

Alabama Governor Bentley said: "Google’s decision to expand its data center network to Alabama is the start of a long-lasting state partnership that will provide a significant boost to our state’s high-tech sector, provide good jobs for our citizens and position the state for additional growth in this important industry."
