SunEdison is constructing the project in Kern County, California, for its TerraForm Power business unit.

The project, which is being built on an abandoned gas and oil field, will feature more than 248,000 SunEdison mono-crystalline solar PV modules.

The plant is expected to generate enough energy for more than 10,000 homes and reduce CO2 emissions equivalent to not burning 125 million pounds of coal per year.

Southern California Edison will buy the energy generated from the plant under a 20-year power purchase agreement.

Google renewable energy principal Nick Coons said: "We believe the world needs a wide range of clean energy technologies, each serving different needs.

"This project with SunEdison presented an opportunity to take an old gas and oil field and turn it into a clean energy producing solar site. It made sense to support it on multiple levels."

The Regulus plant will be the 17th renewable energy project funded by Google, which has agreed to invest more than $1.5bn in renewable energy with a combined capacity exceeding 2.5GW.
