Veolia’s subsidiary SEDE Environnement operates the Biogaz du Grand Auch, which is situated in a farming area that is turned mainly toward the agrifoods sector.

The regional methanization unit generates electricity and heat from organic waste from agriculture, the agrifoods industry, local authorities and collectors.

The unit is capable of treating about 40,000 metric tons of organic waste per year and will produce 3.7 million cubic meters of biogas.

The gas will then be used to produce 1.1MW of energy, which will meet the electricity consumption needs of 4,000 people a year.

Sud-Ouest Aliment, a company located near the site, will use the heat generated from the gas for its animal feed plant.

Veolia said the residue from the digestion process serves to produce organic soil improvers that can be used by local farmers.

Auch Energies Vertes operates the site, which was developed by Biogaz du Grand Auch and constructed by Naskeo Environnement.

Veolia chairman and chief executive officer Antoine Frérot said: "The Biogaz du Grand Auch project is a perfect example of the convergence between the environmental services activities and energy efficiency.

"The project is also a demonstration of the capacity of French know-how to carry out an ambitious energy transition policy to the benefit of the regions, as soon as all the different players get together and work in a close partnership."
