The solar energy summit, GulfSol 2013, is scheduled to take place during 3-5 September 2013 at Dubai International Exhibition Center and will feature government and private sector companies outlining issues relating to solar industry.

GulfSol is a first solar-focused event launched by Gattaca Communications, in association with Bowhead Media and supported by the Saudi Solar Industries Association and Emirates Solar Industry Association.

According to a market report released by GulfSol, MENA (Middle East and North Africa) regions posses huge potential for solar power with direct radiations in the order of 6kWh per square meter per day.

"Recent decreases in the price of solar technologies coupled with rising electricity demand in these growing nations, if coupled with the right policies, could make the region a hub for solar expansion," the report stated.

GulfSol 2013 exhibition manager Derek Burston said: "To meet the goals that the GCC have set themselves means expertise will be needed from the international solar power industry to deal with the difficulties involved in construction in desert terrain, including dust, high winds and transmission requirements."

Saudi Arabia is intending to increase its renewable power capacity by two-fold to 54GW by 2030, of which solar energy is expected to contribute 41GW.

Dubai, meanwhile, has planned to develop a $3.2bn Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park that is estimated to produce 1GW of power upon completion, due in 2030.
