The company plans to complete the construction of the KRW350bn ($315.54m) plant before the end of the year. The new plant will create an estimated 950 jobs in the region.
Hanwha Q Cells also plans to double its production capacity at the 250 MW module plant in Eumseong, North Chungcheong Province. This expansion is expected to be completed by September.
The company had merged its two brands Q Cells and Hanwha SolarOne to form the new entity Hanwha Q Cells last year.
The new cell plant in Jincheon is its first in the country as till now it only produced solar modules.
According to the Korea Times, the company said that the expansion would help meet the increasing demand for cells and modules in the downstream solar energy market along with preparing for additional orders after its recent order from the US.
A company official was quoted as saying: "By having new facilities we have ensured a stable supply to NextEra Energy.
"And it also means we are prepared for the solar energy era. We are expecting to win additional large-scale orders and expand downstream projects, which are to establish and manage solar plants, in the future."
