The consultation, which was launched by the European Commission (EC), is seeking views from interested parties on the need for a European wide and internationally applicable sustainability scheme which could be applied to the production and procurement of biomass for energy uses.

This would include the use of biomass feedstock in dedicated power plants such as the one being developed by Helius Energy at Stallingborough in North East Lincolnshire, UK.

John Seed, managing director of Helius Energy, said: Helius Energy have always stressed that the sources of biomass used in our projects will come from sustainable sources, therefore we welcome this consultation exercise. It is also encouraging that the EC recognizes that in order to be effective, any such scheme needs to be verifiable while avoiding unreasonable administrative burdens on the industry.
