The surveys, which could continue into the operational phase of the extension, will identify how red throated diver seabird species may interact with the project.

The works will cover the Burbo Bank Extension site and the Liverpool Bay area.

Dong Energy’s Jeremy Martin said: "DONG Energy is the market leader in offshore wind and we are committed to the UK having already invested in excess of £5 billion.

"We are pleased to have commissioned another UK company and market leader, HiDef Aerial Surveying, to work with us on the Burbo Bank Extension project."

Located 8km off the UK coast in Liverpool Bay, the project will feature 32 MHI Vestas V164-8MW wind turbines.

The extension facility, which is anticipated to be commissioned in 2017, will be located next to the existing 90MW Burbo Bank wind farm sited on the Burbo Flats in Liverpool.

The extension covers 40km² area and will sit to the west of the operational facility in Liverpool Bay, about 7km north of the North Wirral coast.

Upon completion, the Burbo Bank Extension offshore wind farm will generate enough energy for about 240,000 households.
