The acquired plants generate 30.9MW of electricity. Hydro Ottawa already produces 48MW of green energy, enough to meet the requirement of 40,000 homes per year.

The facilities in New York have a combined capacity of 22.6MW situated in Lyons Falls, Dolgeville, Philadelphia and Diana.

Ontario plants have a combine capacity of 8.3MW and are located in Ottawa, Rideau Lakes, Kingston, Gananoque and South Crosby.

The acquired facilities in Ontario are linked to the provincial electricity grid whereas the plants in New York offer synergies with existing generation operations of Hydro Ottawa.

The acquisition is part of Hydro Ottawa’s 2012-2016 strategy to strengthen its clean energy supply and undertake opportunities for long-term returns.

Hydro Ottawa president and CEO Bryce Conrad said: "We want to increase renewable generation capacity and provide earnings that benefit our shareholder, the City of Ottawa, in an environmentally responsible way.

"After significant due diligence, risk evaluation, and a thorough technical assessment of all assets, we concluded that this was an excellent business opportunity that wisely builds upon our existing generation assets portfolio."

Hydro Ottawa provides energy to more than 319,500 customers in Ottawa and Casselman.
