The power electronics-based Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) equipment is expected to improve the electric transmission capacity of the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region.

The substation, which is critical to the region facing growing industrial power demand, will see the unit commissioned in December 2014.

Alstom Grid North America president Michael Atkinson remarked about the need to reinforce the electrical power grid.

"With this project, Hydro-Québec is making an investment in its current grid infrastructure that will drive significant benefit for its commercial and industrial customers," Atkinson added.

"The businesses that will benefit from this investment will drive new economic activity and have the potential to create new job opportunities, underscoring the broader benefits of modernising the power transmission network."

The Hydro-Québec transmission system consisted of 514 substations, 33,630km of lines, and interconnections with electric grids in Ontario, Atlantic Canada, and the northeastern US.
