Iberdrola is to reinforce its wholesale trading position in Germany through the construction of two natural gas fired combined cycle power plants with a combined capacity of 2200 MW.
The Spanish utility has received the initial consents from the authorities in the German state of Hessen for the construction of its first conventional power plant in the country, a 1100 MW CCGT at Ludwigshau. It is hoping to receive consent for a second CCGT in Lauchhammer next year.
The two projects are part of Iberdrola’s international expansion strategy, which targets Germany as a key European market. The company has been involved in Germany’s wholesale electricity market since 2001.
The authorities in Hessen state have issued the prior resolution and the permits for the water intake and discharge for the Ludwigsau plant. Iberdrola says that the two new plants in Germany will complement its presence in the country’s wholesale gas and electricity markets as well as those of its neighbours.
