The filing represents the first step in the regulatory process and if all goes well, construction on the 300MW Desert Wind Power Project is expected to start this year.

The power project will be located on approximately 20,000 acres of private land near Elizabeth City.

North Carolina governor Bev Perdue said that projects such as the proposed Iberdrola Renewables’ wind farm can help lay the foundation for North Carolina to lead the nation in clean, homegrown energy.

If built, the wind project is expected to provide enough electricity between 55,000 and 70,000 North Carolina homes.
