Under the contract, Iberdrola Engineering will contract 674MW facility on a small portion of a 65-acre waterfront site, which is currently occupied by the decommissioned coal-and-oil-fired Salem Harbor Station generating plant.

Iberdrola Engineering will also be responsible for all engineering, construction, commissioning, and site work for the new facility.

Iberdrola USA chief corporate officer Bob Kump said: "With new EPA carbon emission rules on the horizon, this new, quick-start combined-cycle plant will provide much needed low-emission power for New England.

"As we increase the use of renewable energy resources in the region, this plant will also provide critical balancing services to supplement the growing renewable generation fleet."

The 674MW station is expected to offer efficient, low-emission power to New England as well as help pave the way for more renewable energy installations in the region.
