Under the agreement, Iberdrola will offer electric power on competitive terms to some 700,000 farmers belonging to more than 300 local irrigators groups, while also helping them to achieve enhanced energy efficiency.

The agreement stems from the commitment of both Iberdrola and the National Federation of Spanish Irrigators Communities (Fenacore) to speed up the adaptation to free market conditions by Spanish irrigators groups after fixed rates for power used for irrigation were scrapped on July 1, 2008.

Fenacore is the national federation of the local bodies that administer irrigation water supplies, both surface and underground, throughout Spain. The federation defends its members’ interests in part by harmonizing their criteria and positions in their relations with all outside bodies involved with irrigation. Collectively, the federation’s members consume some 800GWh of electricity each year.

Iberdrola’s network of field agents will provide individual advice to irrigators to help them optimize their power supply contracts and usage time slots and will help them improve energy efficiency and lessen environmental impact.
