Furthermore, in the next few years, Iberdrola expects to reach more than 100,000 households in the Spanish regions of Madrid, Valencia and Murcia. By 2009, the company plans to invest some E1.8 billion in building up its gas distribution and market infrastructure in Spain’s non-regulated gas market.

The gas distribution project in Cubas de la Sagra is part of a larger one to supply 20,000 households, chiefly in new developments, in another five towns south of Madrid. These are Grinon, Villanueva de la Canada, Moraleja de Enmedio, and Serranillos del Valle.

In the initial phase, Iberdrola will supply all of these towns from a gas depot. In early 2008, however, the company expects to have completed links connecting the towns to the national gas pipeline grid that is currently under construction.

One of the most important of Iberdrola’s more than 40 other gas infrastructure projects in the Valencia and Murcia regions is the installation of retail gas distribution infrastructure in Benidorm, for which official permits were obtained in March 2007. The 57km of pipe will supply gas to as many as 28,000 households in the city.

In 2006, Iberdrola became Spain’s second-ranked gas distributor, with a 15% share of the non-regulated market. The company also became the largest developer of new gas infrastructures.
