The Illinois lawmakers gave the approval for the House Speaker Michael Madigan’s nonbinding, bipartisan resolution, which follows financial struggles at a major state energy provider, The Associated Press reported.

The move comes as new standards are to be implemented by the government agencies for nuclear power plants in 2014.

Meanwhile, the Chicago Democrat said that the nuclear plants should be similarly treated to that of other low-carbon energy suppliers.

The potential plant closure would affect job growth as well as reliable energy source, the Democrat added.

Exelon Corporation has said it would close several of its nuclear plants if there is no improvement in financial outlooks.

Illinois, however, is being urged by environmental activists to invest in renewable energy as nuclear power affects environment.
