Once implemented, the latest deal would provide a boost to India’s plans to enhance its nuclear capacity to meet rising energy demands and allow uranium export to India.

The nuclear agreements, along with the enabling administrative arrangements, will now allow Canadian firms to trade controlled nuclear materials, equipment and technology with India.

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper said, "The conclusion of the Administrative Arrangement with India will facilitate opportunities for Canadian companies to play a greater role in meeting India’s growing energy needs."

Harper and his Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh said in a joint statement, "Canada with its large and high quality reserves of uranium could become an important supplier to the Indian nuclear power programme."

Earlier this year, the North American nation has struck a deal with China, opening gates for the sale of uranium yellowcake for use in Chinese nuclear power plants.
