The India- Bangladesh Grid interconnection will facilitate up to 500MW of cross-border electricity transfer from India to Bangladesh, Business Standard reports.

After inauguration the India- Bangladesh Grid interconnection through video-conference from New Delhi, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said that the transmission line and HVDC station in Bheramara will offer a safe and reliable interconnection of the power grids of the two countries.

”Today’s inauguration represents an important milestone in connecting our two countries and the broader region through a growing web of cross-border energy links and trade," Singh added.

Of the total 500MW of power, 250 MW will be from the Center’s unallocated quota of power at the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission notified rates, while the remaining 250MW are scheduled to be contracted by Bangladesh from the Indian electricity market.

The interconnection capacity can be increased to 1,000MW in due course, according the news agency .

Meanwhile, Singh also layed the foundation for the 1,320MW ‘Maitri Thermal Power Project, which is being developed by the Bangladesh-India Friendship Power Company, a joint venture of NTPC Ltd and the Bangladesh Power Development Board.
