Uttarakhand Jal Vidyut Nigam (UJVNL), which is a joint venture between the state and central governments, will develop the Lakhwad hydro power project at a projected cost of INR39.66bn ($724.3m).

According to the state’s Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna the Centre would contribute two thirds of the project costs, while the Uttarakhand government would invest the remaining amount.

Bahuguna said that this approval for the awaited project will contribute further towards the state’s empowerment.

The large project, scheduled to complete in four years, will enhance power generation in Uttarakhand as well as neighboring states.

Planned for construction on the River Yamuna, the project is estimated to have enough capacity to irrigate 39,123ha of land.

Uttarakhand Chief Secretary Alok Kumar Jain further urged the Centre to resume work in halted power projects in the state as demand has exceeded current supply.
