The government selected 1722 hamlets, mostly from the violence hit; Maoist dominated areas, wherein solar-powered water pumps will be installed.

A proposal to this effected was approved by a high-level committee of the state government under the chairmanship of Chief Secretary Sunil Kumar, reported Business Standard.

Officials of the Public Health Engineering group failed to provide further details on the workings of the technology and scheme but maintained that the installations would be safe from any insurgent activity.

The government is expected to get the installation work underway at the earliest and is also mulling over the generation of electricity using solar energy in the region.
