Each of the roof-top systems will generate 1kW of energy and will be installed on individual households.
This initiative will have a total cost outlay of INR1.75bn ($32.47m) with the government providing INR800m ($14.8m) from the ministry for new and renewable energy (MNRE).
The ministry approved the project, under its Solar Off-Grid Photovoltaic program of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM), reported the Economic Times.
When fully operational, the project will generate 15 million kWh of electricity per annum.
New and renewable energy minister Farooq Abdullah assured of the ministry’s support for the second phase of the project aimed at reaching over 50,000 households with a subsidy support of over INR2bn ($37.1m).
The JNNSM was launched in 2010 and aims to achieve a target of 200MW off-grid solar applications to be achieved by the end of March 2013.
