Atomic Energy Commission member M.R. Srinivasan was quoted by IANS as saying that fuel loading at the nuclear plant will start next week followed by power generation in October and will attain peak capacity by December.

"There is very little waste that will be generated at Kudankulam and they are within acceptable limits," said Srinivasan.

"Several more safety tests will be carried out before the unit attains full capacity.

"We’ll find it very difficult to meet India’s energy needs fast enough without nuclear power."

The project has been built with Russian government’s cooperation and nuclear vendor Atomstroyexport involved in it.

Another power plant in Tamil Nadu at Kalpakkam with 500MW capaity and prototype fast breeder reactor will commence operations in 2013 and is currently in advanced construction phase.
