As per the plan, two transmission lines would be laid down – first, from South Sumatra to Malaysian peninsula and second, from West Kalimantan to Serawak.

PLN president director Nur Pamudji was quoted by The Jakarta Post as saying that the firm has begun the construction of the West Kalimantan-Serawak transmission this year and expects it to be completed by the end of 2014.

"We need to acquire land within the area of the projects before we can open tender to appoint contractors," Pamudji said.

The 122km-long West Kalimantan-Serawak transmission line would have the capacity of 275kV.

Pamudji noted PLN is in the process of establishing a joint venture company to handle the transmission line operation for the South Sumatra-Malaysian peninsula line, which is expected to start operations in 2017.

"After we create the joint venture as the business framework for the transmission line, then we will begin its construction next year."
