They have developed a system called Aerolaser Helipad, which claimed to make the offshore oil and gas structure safe to operate while scare away birds in an animal friendly manner.

The Aerolaser Helipad is an automated device that uses laser and sound to keep birds away from the helidecks of offshore structures making them safe to operate.

Bird Control Group CEO Steinar Henskes said that Total E&P Nederland shared its offshore knowledge and gave financial support to the company to develop the system.

"By implementing this bird repelling system, Total is the first oil company in the world to integrate its offshore activities with nature in such a sustainable way."

Total E&P Nederland chose Bird Control Group as partner in the project as it has experience in bird control across the aviation sector and at industrial sites.

World Wildlife Fund has also extended support to the development of the technology.

After implementing the system in one installation Total is planning to install the bird scaring system at three other locations.

Total E&P Nederland PR and Communications manager Yvonne Hoddenbach said: "We are always looking to improve safety across our operations. We are proud to be the first company to install the device and we are confident it will help to improve health and safety on our platforms.

CHC Helicopter Helideck inspector Jack van Sligter said: "We want to provide our crew and passengers with safe working conditions, and this includes a safe landing offshore.

"Pilots are glad to see actions are being taken to improve the situation."
