The hydroelectric plant, one of the key projects in Tajikistan energy sector, has capacity of 220MW electricity generation and is scheduled to generate up to 1 billion KWh electricity annually, Tasnim News Agency reports.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani was quoted by Press TV as saying: "We are delighted to announce that one of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s engineering efforts is bearing fruit in this country, and a hydropower plant is being inaugurated.

"However, this inauguration does not mean that this is the end of the road, but it means the start of cooperation between the two countries in different economic sectors.

About $180m has been invested in the power plant, which will be owned by Tajikistan following its use by Iran for 12.5 years. The first unit of the project was inaugurated in 2011.
