Two convertor stations for a planned hvdc link between Italy and Greece will be supplied by ABB under a contract worth over $100 million. The two stations will each have a capacity of 500 MWe. One will be located at Galatina in southeast Italy, and the other at Arachthos in northwest Greece. They will be linked via an undersea cable.
This is the first energy project to be implemented under the European Union’s Trans-European Networks programme. It is being financed by the European Commission and the European Investment Bank. The link is scheduled to enter service in 2000.
