The payment solution was delivered as part of an initiative to offer alternative energy sources to Waterfall Country Estate, in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The solution features 2,000 gas meters and a full online prepayment vending and management system which will enable consumers to pay for gas online through credit card.
Itron said the solution will give residents of Waterfall Country Estate, an environmentally-friendly residential development, access to gas with prepayment meters.
As part of the project, Itron was responsible for solution installation and training and will also provide ongoing prepaid vending services.
EnviroFuel director for South Africa Etienne Mitton said Itron’s smart payment technology helps the company reduce its reliance on the power grid, which has become increasingly strained with the increase of commercial and residential properties.
"With prepaid gas, Waterfall Country Estate residents now have access to a reliable alternative energy source, mitigating escalating electricity costs," Mitton said.
