ZigBee Smart Energy is a wireless mesh networking technology that is used to link various devices.

Itron’s newly certified products are the EM425 meter, an IEC-certified electric smart meter for the UK market, and the M2 Gateway, a communications module that enables third party meters to communicate on the company’s IRF mesh network.

Itron’s ZigBee adoption covers domestically the ANSI-certified meters and IEC-certified meters internationally, and further into integrated products and communications modules, incorporating ZigBee into third party products.

Itron stated it’s certified products support the company’s aim of using ZigBee to enable reliable power standard for managing delivery of electricity and gas.

ZigBee products can also integrate with other communications technologies, including Wi-Fi, cellular and RF mesh that allows utilities to integrate assets with the communications network of their choice.

Itron president and Energy COO Philip Mezey said, "We believe that adopting international standards, such as ZigBee Smart Energy, and certifying product implementations of those standards is necessary to achieve true interoperability, which is key to the success of the smart grid."
