Japan Petroleum Exploration (Japex) has teamed up with Mitsui for the construction of a gas-fired plant in Fukushima, Japan.

A joint venture, Fukushima Gas Power, has been formed by the two companies for the project. Japex will hold a 50.7% and the remaining by Mitsui.

The plant will feature two 600MW units. The first unit is planned to be commissioned in January 2020, and the second in April.

The power generation facility is planned to be built in Soma port, next to Japex-owned LNG terminal which is due to enter service in 2018.

A Japex spokesman told Reuters that the plant will be constructed with a potential investment of approximately JPY100bn ($834m).

Japan aims to have more than 20GW of gas-fired units installed by around 2028 in order replace ageing fossil fuel power units.
