Located on the Balu River, the hydropower plant and a similar facility were constructed by Japan and later upgraded in the 1980s through a loan from the latter.

EPC, however, did not disclose details about the equipment to be replaced. The machinery replacement is scheduled to be completed in 2016, reports HydroWorld.com

The upgraded hydropower facility is expected to boost power supply in the country. Currently, only 25% of all households have access to electricity, according to a data of the Ministry of Power.
