To be located in Qweira in the southern Governorate of Aqaba, the proposed solar power plant will have an installed capacity of around 75MW, The Jordan Times reported citing the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.

The project will be backed by a funding from the $5bn Gulf Cooperation Council grant.

The pre-qualified local and international companies include First Solar Electric; Spain’s Elecnor; SunEdison Italia Construction; China Gezhouba Group International Engineering; Dongfang Electric International Corporation; Isolux Ingenieria and Guangdong Power Engineering Corporation of China Energy Engineering Group ; and Zhuhai Singyes Green Building Technology.

Upon submission of technical and financial offers, committees will be formed to select the winning bidder.

Renewable energy projects with a combined capacity of 1800MW will be connected to the national power grid by the end of 2018.

Jordan currently imports 97% of its energy needs annually and is aimed at increasing the contribution of renewable energy to the overall energy mix to 10% by 2020.

Commenting on the project, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources spokesperson Haidar Gammaz said: "This is one of the important projects for Jordan and part of its strategy towards further adoption of renewable energy."
