Jordanian-French Uranium Mining, a joint venture between Jordan government and French firm AREVA will construct an open-pit mine in the central region, reports The Jordan Times.

According to initial surveys, the mine in central region has estimated reserves of 65,000-70,000 tonnes of mineable uranium ore and is expected to mine and mill uranium oxide.

The county contains extensive uranium reserves, including 15,000 tonnes in Al Hassa, southwest of the capital, and thousands of tonnes in potential reserves along the Jordanian-Iraqi border.

The Jordan Atomic Energy Commission has started a review of financial bids from three international firms for the construction of the country’s first nuclear reactor.

Under the nuclear power programme, a nuclear reactor will be build near Mafraq, some 40km northeast of the capital.
