Rooftop solar

The Hindu reported Shivakumar as saying at a press conference that potential bidders to set up solar plants with total capacity of 450MW will be invited within a week through the tenders.

Earlier, Shivakumar said that the government had proposed to encourage households and entrepreneurs to install solar units on rooftops to generate solar power.

Currently, about 300MW from the targeted 1,000MW capacity will be allocated to farmers by encouraging them to install p small plants to generate a capacity of 1 to 3MW on their farmland.

For setting up solar farms, farmers will also have option for leasing out their land to solar power developers through the government.

"Even those having a house on a 30X40 ft site can set up a solar plant on their rooftop and sell the excess power, which is left after taking care of their own requirements, to Escoms. They would have to install a two-way meter which would measure the flow of power in both the directions," Shivakumar added.
