Engineering and construction firm KBR has secured a pre-front end engineering design (FEED) contract from BP for the development of the Tortue / Ahmeyim field offshore Mauritania and Senegal.

KBR has also been awarded project support services contract for the Tortue project.

Under the contract, KBR will be responsible for design of the subsea, pre-treatment floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) facility, inshore hub/terminal, and interfaces for floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) for the Tortue Project.

KBR Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) president Jay Ibrahim said: “KBR is pleased to offer our world-class engineering design expertise to continue to support this significant project from its early stages and to help BP and its partners develop an LNG hub for Mauritania and Senegal.

The pre-FEED contract is expected to be carried out by KBR over the next six months. KBR will support BP in the optimize stage of the Tortue field development.

KBR plans to execute the pre-FEED contract from London office, which earlier supported multiple recent BP projects including the Glen Lyon FPSO and Shah Deniz Phase II projects.

However, the value of the contract awarded by BP has not been disclosed.

In December last year, the British oil giant had signed agreements to purchase stakes in exploration blocks in Mauritania and Senegal from Kosmos Energy for $916m.

The approximately 33,000km2 of acreage considered for acquisition included the Tortue field, which estimated by Kosmos to hold more than 15 trillion cubic feet (tcf) of gas.

Under the terms of the agreements, both the firms agreed that Kosmos will continue to be the technical operator for the exploration phase of the project and drill three new exploration wells beginning in 2017.
