Under the 20-yeardeal, Kipeto will construct and maintain the wind plant, and supply power to Kenya Power.

Kenya Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich said: "The PPA is an important step forward in enabling the country meet its development goals utilizing renewable power that is cost effective and environmentally friendly."

Kipeto has secured $233m financing from the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) to finance the project.

Work on the project is scheduled to commence in November and will be carried out through 24 months.

Kenya Energy and Petroleum Principal Secretary Joseph Njoroge said: "This 100MW PPA provides the Kipeto stakeholders the off take certainty needed to advance the project and provides Kenya Power with an important addition to their generation plan."

The power plant is being developed as part of the country’s plan to diversify the 5,000MW of additional generation capacity to meet the increasing power demands.

Kenya currently generates 2,211MW, and its energy mix includes 37.6% hydro, 27.3% geothermal, 32.9% fossil thermal and 0.4% wind.
