The company applied for the approval of Nuclear Regulation Authority for a 20-year extension of the two reactors, which are currently offline.

According to the law on the Regulation of Nuclear Source Material, Nuclear Fuel Material and Reactors, nuclear plants have an operational life cap of 40 years, but have an option to extend up to 20 years.

The reactor 1 of the Takahama plant has already completed 40 years of operational period while reactor 2 will reach the milestone in November.

The company has undertaken special inspection of object equipment such as reactor pressure vessels and containment vessels of Units 1 and 2 in December 2014, in order to become eligible for the extension.

The moratorium period for the units will expire in July 2016.
