The designation by Korean Agency for Technology and Standards (KATS), a division within the Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MTIE), will allow UL to test wind turbines for local and international certification as it follows the IEC 61400-22 or GL Guideline.

UL’s subsidiary DEWI will test power performance, power quality, acoustic noise/vibration and mechanical loads of large scale wind turbine generation systems of large scale wind turbines.

Underwriters Laboratories bought Germany-based wind energy measurement and testing services companies DEWI and DEWI-OCC in 2012.

UL Korea vice president and general manager Stephen Hwang said, "As the new certification process will eliminate redundant testings and assessments by various testing centers in different markets, our customers will save time as well as costs in receiving the certifications."

The new certification process is expected to begin on 1 September.
