Florida Power & Light Company has selected L-3 MAPPS to supply a part-task trainer for the St. Lucie nuclear power plant.

The trainer, which is due to be developed in 2014, will be used to prepare staff for shutdown cooling operations that are schedule to take place at St. Lucie Unit 1 in the first quarter of next year.

As part of the project, L-3 MAPPS will develop a new shutdown cooling system model utilizing its Orchid® Modeling Environment. Training will be carried out in a classroom setting, with operators using virtual panels using L-3’s Orchid Touch Interface.

L-3 MAPPS also says it will develop special-purpose active schematics, allowing the instructor to monitor the shutdown cooling system parameters, inject malfunctions and trigger remote operator actions.

The project will bring the number of Orchid Touch Interface bays deployed for various purposes at St Lucie to eight.
