Under the £200m contract, the company will build a 410m turbine house and sluice gate structure.

Laing O’Rourke has selected Arup, to design and engineer the buildup. Work under the contract will create up to 500 workers at peak construction.

Tidal Lagoon (Swansea Bay) is a special purpose vehicle company launched to build, own and operate the 320MW tidal lagoon facility with an operational life of 120 years.

Tidal Lagoon Power engineering and construction director Andrew McNaughton said: "As preferred bidder, their contribution over the next few months alongside General Electric and Andritz Hydro will be invaluable in preparing for delivery on site in 2016."

Laing O’Rourke will sign a fixed price contract for the main build later this year following advanced works and value engineering.
The hydropower plant is expected to produce over 500GWh annually to serve over 155,000 homes.

The project is also being supported by Atkins, General Electric, and Andritz Hydro while Prudential and InfraRed Capital Partners are serving as equity partners.

Tidal Lagoon (Swansea Bay) has launched tenders for the project’s marine works package and public realm ancillary works.

Further tenders are planned to be issued this year to construct a turbine assembly plant in Wales and public realm and buildings work.
