Under the first phase of the project, Lighting Science Group has replaced old, inefficient lights with its PROLIFIC LSR-2 LED street lights.

The energy efficiency project will cut the District’s annual carbon dioxide emissions by 719 tons, the company said.

Washington, D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray said, "Already results show these new light fixtures are saving energy — 57 to 60 percent — compared to the old mercury vapor and high pressure sodium lights."

Prior to the start of the project, the District Department of Transportation in partnership with Howard University Transportation Research Center conducted a study and analysis of light emitting diode lighting products from a variety of vendors and manufacturers.

The LED lighting project received support and funding from the District Department of the Environment under the US Department of Energy’s Energy Efficient and Conservation Block Grant program.
