The Indonesian state electricity company PLN is to build a 309 km transmission line on the island of Java as part of an extension of the island’s 500 kV network linking new power plants in the east to the major urban areas of Jakarta, Bandung and Yogyakarta.

The project is to be built by a consortium led by ABB under a contract valued at $65 million and is scheduled for completion within 24 months. It includes 750 towers, each weighing around 26 000 t, 7500 km of conductors, 380 000 insulators and a ground wire with integral optical fibres for telecommunications.

Around 70 per cent of the line is to be built over rice growing regions and will require a special foundation system to cope with the soft soil conditions.
