The expansion double’s Talison’s production capabilities to around 100,000t of lithium carbonate equivalent per annum, equal to about two-thirds of the global demand according to the company.

Talison chairman Peter Robinson predicted that lithium will play an important part in the energy future of the world and power not just mobile consumer electronics but also electric vehicles, grid stabilization batteries, and solar storage.

"Looking forward to the future, this new expansion will also provide high-quality feedstock for our own plant to produce lithium carbonate for customers in countries including Japan, Korea and Europe," added Robinson.

The expanded facility will both provide large scale operational efficiencies while allowing the company to cater to the needs of the lithium market.
