When water level is above the top of the gate then hydraulic loading of water is not triangular but rather trapezoidal in nature. The available equations in the case of triangular loading for determination of spacing of horizontal girders do not serve in the case of trapezoidal hydraulic loading. It is desirable that location of the horizontal girders should coincide with the centre of gravity of water pressure and at the same time it is also essential to have equal water load on each horizontal girder. An attempt has been made to develop general relationships for the location of horizontal girders in the case of trapezoidal hydraulic loading based on theoretical concepts, which may be found very useful.
