Developed jointly by Dong Energy, E.ON and Masdar, the farm currently consists of 15 turbines.

Construction on the first phase of the wind farm began in March 2011, and is expected to complete by December 2012 to provide electricity to over 470,000 UK homes.

London Array’s 175 turbines of the first phase have a combined capacity of 630MW. Following the approval of the second phase the plant will generate nearly 870MW. The complete wind farm is spread over an area of 245km².

Thanet South MP Laura Sandys said, "To have a world class wind farm maintained from Ramsgate is great for the local community and local business. We very much hope that the company will be able to realise its plans to develop Phase Two adding an additional 240MW."

E.ON UK CEO Dr Tony Cocker added, "We firmly believe that electricity from renewable sources has a vital part to play in helping us to deliver energy in a way that is sustainable, affordable and secure and this is why we are aiming to reduce the costs of offshore wind by 40% by 2015."
