The proposed project includes the construction of two dams and new transmission lines that are expected to generate enough electricity to power the province by 2023.
The Keeyask Generating Station and the Conawapa Generating Station are expected to have an installed capacity of around 695MW and 1,485MW respectively.
Commenting on the project, Manitoba Hydro president and CEO Scott Thomson said that the company’s analysis showcases that continuing to develop hydropower resources is in the best long-term interest of Manitoba Hydro customers and the province of Manitoba.
"Our Preferred Development Plan provides lower long term rates for Manitobans, greater reliability and security of supply, superior environmental and socio-economic benefits and job creation for the province compared to other options and alternatives," added Thomson.
The Keeyask Generating Station is expected to become operational by 2019, while the Conawapa Generating Station will become operational by 2026.
