The plant was constructed by The Andersons Marathon Ethanol, an equal-stake joint venture between The Andersons Ethanol Investment, a subsidiary of The Andersons, and Marathon Petroleum Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of Marathon Oil. Construction on the facility began in November 2006.

Along with the 110 million gallons of ethanol, the plant annually will produce 350,000 tons of distillers dried grains, an animal feed ingredient.

Gary Heminger, executive vice president of Marathon Oil and president of the company’s refining, marketing and transportation operations, said: Marathon has been blending ethanol fuels for more than 15 years and is among the largest blenders of ethanol in the US. As a partner in the Greenville facility, the largest ethanol plant in Ohio, Marathon is one of the first US oil companies to initiate its own ethanol production operations.
