The power station, with an installed capacity of 842MW, is expected to achieve a thermal efficiency in excess of 58% and all of the station’s output is contracted to Scottish & Southern Energy (SSE). SSE is expected to supply all of the fuel for the power station.

The power station is jointly owned by Ireland-based ESB International and Scottish & Southern Energy. It is a 50:50 joint venture between the companies. Total investment into Marchwood is approximately GBP380m.

SSE claimed that this is the UK’s first large-scale new CCGT power station to enter commercial operation for five years. The completion takes the capacity of SSE’s electricity generation portfolio, including its share of joint ventures, to just over 11,500MW.

According to Marchwood Power, the plant will use latest technology to ensure maximum energy efficiency and minimal impact on the environment.
