The plant has been mainly set up to recycle material used at the $2.6bn integrated solar cell facility set up by fellow Norwegian firm Renewable Energy Corp (REC) also in Tuas.

Metallkraft’s facility will recycle REC’s spent slurry, a liquid used to cut silicon wafers, which would otherwise become industrial waste, without adding any chemicals or producing waste streams.

Metallkraft’s proprietary process, which is claimed to recycle 100% of spent slurry, enable REC to use the recycled slurry instead of fresh slurry for producing solar cell.

The Economic Development Board of Singapore encourages the development of such recycling methods to help solar-related companies, including those dealing in solar equipment, materials and processes, as Singapore’s solar industry continues to grow.
