The contract was awarded to the consortium after it accepted the terms that were set forth in the board’s previous decision on August 25, 2009. Metka had bagged the contract from DEI in August but the final approval was subject to the preferred bidder accepting the terms. The terms included a price tag of EUR500m compared to a bid of EUR543m.

Meanwhile, the DEI board approved the the initiation of the tender procedures for EUR350m Cyclades Interconnection Project.

The project aims at the security and reliability of the energy supply in the islands of Syros, Paros, Naxos and Mykonos, the improvement of the quality of the supplied energy, the improvement of the environmental conditions in the islands due to the decommissioning or placement in cold reserve of the autonomous power stations, and the possibility of future exploitation of the geothermal fields in Milos and energy generated by wind farms.
